An estimate, not tax or financial advice. Fees change and depend on your account; tax depends on your whole income. US contractors usually pay estimated tax each quarter.

## How the calculator works

It multiplies your rate by your weekly hours, takes off the cost of receiving the money and converting it to your currency, then sets aside tax. In the US it adds self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of your net pay and the income tax rates you choose, with half of the self-employment tax deducted first. Elsewhere you choose one share to set aside, because rules differ by country.

## Why contractors need it

AI training platforms advertise gross hourly rates. As a contractor you pay your own tax, receive no paid leave, and often lose a few percent when dollars are converted. A $40 an hour role is closer to $28 to $30 an hour after US tax, and a $20 role paid by PayPal in India loses about $70 a month to conversion alone. Knowing the real figure helps you compare offers and plan your month.

## Pay calculator: common questions

### How much tax do AI training contractors pay in the US?

Platforms such as Mercor, Outlier and DataAnnotation pay most US workers as independent contractors, so no tax is withheld. You owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of your net earnings, for Social Security and Medicare, plus federal and state income tax at your own rate. Half of the self-employment tax is deductible. The calculator includes all of this. Most contractors pay estimated tax each quarter.

### Which payout method keeps the most money?

Usually Wise, which converts US dollars to your currency for well under 1%. PayPal is the most widely accepted but its conversion usually costs 3 to 4% above the market rate. Payoneer and Stripe sit in between. Use the comparison under your result to see the difference for your rate and hours.

### Are the exchange rates live?

No. They are approximate rates for early November 2026, because rates move every day. Type today's rate into the exchange rate box for an exact figure.

### Is this tax advice?

No. It is an estimate to help you compare offers and plan. Tax depends on your whole income, deductions and country, so check with a tax adviser or your local tax office.

### What hourly rate do AI training jobs pay?

Across open roles on AI Train Job that state an hourly rate, the median is $75/hr. Generalist work often pays $10 to $25 an hour and expert roles much more. See the pay data page for rates by field.
